History Of The Birch Aquarium
The Birch Aquarium was founded in 1903 following the establishment of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego in San Diego, California. The purpose of the Marine Biological Association was to study and research the underwater flora and fauna from the nearby coasts of the Pacific Ocean. The Birch Aquarium was then used to present the local marine biologists’ discoveries to the public.

The exhibit was named after the Beyster family, who generously donated support of one million dollars to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Birch Aquarium. Different sponsors of varying degrees and magnitudes were also honored in various locations inside the exhibit area, even extending the opportunity for donors to give the penguins a name.
