History Of Downtown

When Alonzo Erastus Horton decided that the San Diego Bay area should be the city’s center, he purchased 960 acres of land there in 1867. Horton chose it rather than Old Town, which the Spanish had selected for safety reasons.

Horton soon discovered it amid a boom in the economy. The southern Downtown neighborhoods developed as a result. The neighborhood houses the current Gaslamp Quarter.

However, Horton’s luck ran out in the late 1880s, and the Gaslamp Quarter deteriorated. As investment in the suburbs wore down the central city over the years, Downtown fell into disrepair.

Redevelopment initiatives started to gain momentum in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the neighborhood began to recover as Horton Plaza, the San Diego Convention Center. Finally, the beginning of the Gaslamp Quarter revitalization projects were all completed.
