The Mingei International Museum of Folk Art has a new home. The institution recently relocated from its home at the University Towne Centre to a more prominent position in San Diego’s Balboa Park. After a three-year renovation, the facility is set to reopen in September. The museum’s collection comprises around 8,500 objects, including terra-cotta sculptures from India, period clothing from China, and contemporary ceramics. The Mingei Museum is located in the historic Balboa Park building, housed in a building designed for the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition. The building is an example of Mission Revival architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Mingei International Museum’s pièce de résistance is its Flight Simulator, which allows visitors to experience the thrill of flying a World War I fighter plane. The Museum also has a dinosaur exhibit with skeletons in the “death pose” and fossils from eastern Utah and western Colorado. There are also a number of other interactive exhibits. In addition to the IMAX movie theater, the museum offers a full range of hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. The Museum has its own music studio where children can play musical instruments.
The Mingei International Museum has a great selection of the best in folk art. While the museum itself is the best way to see it, the surrounding Balboa Park neighborhood also has a ton to offer. It’s also home to the San Diego Art Institute, which has its own museum space, as well as to the San Diego Museum of Man.
