San Diego Model Railroad Museum

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is a great place to visit for any train enthusiast. Located at 1649 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101. In Balboa Park, this is one of the largest model railroad museums in the country. It’s open from Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The museum has a number of permanent and traveling exhibits. Some permanent exhibits include the Toy Train Gallery, Cabrillo Southwestern, and Pacific Desert Lines. These exhibits feature replicas of actual historic railway lines. The Toy Train Gallery is a popular attraction that features a variety of Lionel-type 3-rail O gauge trains running on a track. The diorama is 1500 square feet and contains various scenery and minute details.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is the only accredited model railroad museum in the United States. It is also the largest indoor model railroad exhibit in North America. It has over 27,000 square feet of tracks and models, which includes four layouts.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is in the Casa de Balboa Building at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The museum shares a parking lot with Fleet Science Center. During summer, the museum runs a training camp that teaches students how to build trains and study the history of railroading. These camps are designed to be grade-appropriate, so the little ones will have fun while learning. A special exhibit focuses on women in the railroad industry. There are also several workshops and classes which focus on train construction and review games. This is a wonderful attraction for children and families of all ages.

Another permanent exhibit, the Old Town Model Railroad Depot, is a 2,000-square-foot, custom-built layout. The route of the railroad takes visitors through a mountain town, an industrial district, a lake with sharks, and a drive-in movie theater. There are also a few trestles and a dam that add to the beauty of the scenery.

The museum also hosts a few temporary exhibits. During the summer, the Toy Train Gallery is a huge draw. It features an enchanting, interactive kid’s layout with realistic scenery and operating toy trains. The locomotive at the Toy Train Gallery is fitted with a tiny camera, giving visitors a first-person perspective of the train’s journey.

The Railroad Museum in San Diego is a great place to bring the whole family. The museum has five permanent exhibits and a variety of rotating exhibits. They offer educational programming and a gift shop. The museum is free to enter on holidays, but visitors can pay for admission to the museum on other days.
