The San Diego Veterans Museum At Balboa Park

The San Diego Veterans Museum at Balboa Park honors all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is housed in the former San Diego Naval Hospital Chapel at 2115 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101. In Balboa Park. Its mission is to tell the story of 20th-century military engagements in the US, emphasizing the San Diego area.

The museum has rotating exhibits and is closed on Mondays. The museum is free for residents on the second Tuesday of the month. It also has free shuttle services to its location. The museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm on most days. The admission charge is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for active duty and military personnel with ID.

One of the museum’s most notable features is the WWII-era stained glass windows collection. Fred Wyland, a veteran of the Korean War, designed seven of the windows. Another noteworthy feature is the Military History Research Library. The Naval Hospital’s museum is where veterans can share their stories with the public. The library maintains an active veterans’ oral history project.

The San Diego Veterans Museum at Balboa Park is only part of the Navy’s involvement with the park. The Naval Hospital has two units within the park. The hospital still houses thousands of patients, but the number of beds has been reduced to about 4550.

Several museums are housed within the park, including the Natural History Museum. The museum has entered into a restoration agreement with the San Diego Museum of Man. A representative from the museum will notify the city’s Museum of Man of any professional help they may need.

There are several other attractions in the park. These include the Veterans Memorial Garden, which was dedicated in 2005. The garden includes a statue of a WWII B-24 Liberator. Inspiration Point offers spectacular views of downtown San Diego.

Balboa Park is also home to the city’s vocational school. It is also the location of the Army’s hospital corps school, which is located in the Camp Kidd section of the park. Many of the Exposition’s buildings have been converted into wards for patients. These buildings are also used as classrooms and offices. Anti-aircraft groups even use some.

Balboa Park has a rich history. It was once the largest park in the country. It was also a Mecca for world sightseers. However, its role in the war was limited. Some of its facilities continued to operate during the war.

The San Diego Veterans Museum at Balboa Park is at a former WWII-era Navy Chapel. It is an excellent way to learn about the role the US has played in the world during the twentieth century. Grass parks and paths surround the building. It is open to the public on the second Tuesday of the month. There is free parking and a shuttle service to the museum. The park is also open on Sundays.
