History Of Del Mar
The first California Southern Railroad train crossed the tracks on its new route from Los Angeles to San Diego on August 14, 1882. The original train tracks were also laid down in Township 14, now known as Del Mar. Theodore M. Loop, the project’s contractor and engineer liked the area so much and told the people about finding the most attractive place on the entire coast.”
Loop’s wife, Ella, named the town Del Mar after a famous poem, “The Fight for Paso Del Mar.” And, that same year, “Colonel” Jacob Taylor, who had moved to Rancho Penasquitos with – the family, met Loop, who recommended they build a town.
Taylor was mesmerized by the beauty and possibilities of the region, and in the summer of 1885, they paid homesteader Enoch Talbert $1,000 to purchase 338.11 acres near the northern end of the mesa. Del Mar was thus created in a formal manner.
Taylor also opened “Casa Del Mar,” the area’s first resort, in 1886. In order to provide guests with entertainment, Taylor constructed a dance pavilion on the beach as well as the Natatorium, a sizable swimming pool that jutted into the water. Del Mar quickly became a well-known vacation destination.
